16 x 20 in | Oil, Gold and Silver Leaf on Canvas
Created for the “100 Women Artists in History represented by 100 Contemporary Women Artists” exhibition in Tampa, FL (January 2023), this painting honors the sixteenth-century Italian painter Barbara Longhi. Catherine was invited to reimagine Longhi’s Adoring the Child (1605), and was struck by the tenderness in the Madonna’s expression and the luminous golden tones of the palette.
In her contemporary interpretation, Catherine incorporated gold leaf to illuminate the figure and silver leaf for the background, while applying her signature gilded border technique. The raised, textural edge frames the Madonna like an artifact, creating a dialogue between sacred history and contemporary artistry.
The title, Longhi/Zanghi Madonna, reflects both reverence for Barbara Longhi’s original masterpiece and the artist’s own contribution, weaving two similar names — and two eras — into one work.
Enhanced canvas prints may be ordered until my next series is launched early spring 2026 Stay tuned for the product listing and prices.
